Below you can see the background regarding the support of the World Bank and the European Commission on transition issues (the post-lignite era).
The report was carried out during the kick-off meeting of the European Commission's Technical Assistance Programme, which was held in Kozani on Tuesday, 19 February 2019.
Western Macedonia is participating as a pilot region in the Platform for Coal Regions in Transition, an initiative that will facilitate the development and implementation of projects and the formulation of long-term strategies in regions undergoing transition. The initiative has been designed to accelerate the transition to clean energy models, placing emphasis on social justice, structural changes, the creation of new skills, and the financing of the real economy.
Western Macedonia, as a pilot Region, officially requested the assistance of the European Commission within the framework of the Structural Reform Support Programme. The European Commission, following its criteria, principles, and internal operating regulations, decided to provide technical assistance, which will aid the Region in its transition towards new economic models by defining a detailed Roadmap for Lignite Sector Adaptation and Just Transition.
