A documented feature on the region’s productive memory
Western Macedonia’s transition is not only about its energy and productive future. It is also about how a substantial legacy of buildings, machinery, archives, workplaces and collective memory can be safeguarded and meaningfully reintegrated into contemporary life.
The new feature on the region’s industrial heritage brings together and organises two decades of publicly available evidence. At its core are LIPTOL, the Ptolemaida Power Station and AEVAL: three sites that connect technological history, labour, landscape transformation and the choices now facing the Just Transition.
The feature includes:
- key studies and proposals for protection, restoration and adaptive reuse,
- institutional positions and the respective roles of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TCG) – Western Macedonia Department, Public Power Corporation S.A. (PPC), the Municipality of Eordea and other competent bodies,
- conferences, public events and initiatives that have sustained the discussion,
- selected public audiovisual records, accompanied by concise summaries of their main points.
The feature clearly distinguishes research proposals, institutional decisions, funding opportunities and projects that have actually been implemented. Its purpose is to support a public discussion that moves beyond nostalgia and connects memory with spatial planning, education, culture and sustainable regional development.
