The debate on Western Macedonia’s post-lignite future has been part of my work and concerns for many years. Over that period, numerous studies, plans and assessments were published at different times and by a wide range of organisations.
Each study reflects the data, expectations and priorities of its time. Yet when the material remains scattered across multiple sources, it is difficult to form a coherent picture: what was projected, what ultimately happened, which conclusions remain relevant, and which issues need to be reconsidered.
Bringing these documents together in one place is more than an exercise in archiving. It makes it possible to compare earlier assessments with current conditions and can help inform a recalibration of the region’s course for the years ahead.
An Open Digital Dossier
To this end, mavromatidis.gr now hosts a digital dossier covering the period 2006–2026. It brings together studies and research papers on employment, income, demographic change, energy, the environment, and the region’s transition to a new productive model.
Where available, each document is accompanied by:
- a link to the primary or official source,
- a concise description of its scope,
- editorial notes on its principal findings and significance,
- chronological and thematic classification to facilitate searching and comparison.
The aim is to give readers seeking to study the region’s trajectory, draw conclusions or contribute to the public debate an organised and accessible body of evidence, rather than requiring them to piece together fragmented information from dispersed sources.
Understanding what came before is essential—not to remain anchored in the past, but to assess the present and plan the future with greater precision.
