On Wednesday 8/5/2019, an award ceremony was successfully held in the events hall of the Technical Chamber of Greece – Western Macedonia Section (TEE/TDM), presented by members of its Steering Committee. The event honoured the male and female students of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Polytechnic School of the University of Western Macedonia, who participated in the student team of Typhoon MotoRacing and in the design, analysis, and construction of the multi-award-winning racing motorcycle “Chimera”.
The event was opened by the President of the Steering Committee of TEE/TDM, Mr Dimitris Mavromatidis who emphasised that the future bodes brilliantly for the current students and tomorrow's graduate engineers of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Polytechnic School of the University of Western Macedonia following their award-winning achievements.
The team's scientific supervisor, Assistant Professor Mr Dimitris Giagopoulos spoke about the Typhoon MotoRacing team, which was created in 2014 by students from the mechanical engineering school of the University of Western Macedonia. Last year (October 2018), the team participated in the international Motostudent V competition in Aragon, Spain, with the prototype “Chimera”, a Moto3-type racing motorcycle, achieving 7th place in the overall standings among 45 university teams, which included top polytechnic institutions in Europe, with numerous awards for the mechanical and design aspect, the structural analysis, and its innovation.

Finally, on behalf of the Typhoon MotoRacing student team, its leader, Mr Efthymios Papas, pointed out that the 21 students who participated last year in the design, analysis, and construction of the “Chimera” racing motorcycle have created sub-groups to perfect their project, a 250cc racing motorcycle. Each group has a specific goal regarding the study and development of the engine, chassis, electrics, suspension, brakes, and aerodynamics, with the ultimate objective being the future industrialisation of the motorcycle and the creation of a final product suitable for the road.
